Dr. Schaefer works with individuals of all ages, particularly individuals dealing with life transitions or difficult circumstances, mood and anxiety disorders, and autism spectrum disorder.

Dr. Schaefer is passionate about working with individuals to understand their strengths, in order to overcome the obstacles they deal with. She uses a holistic lens, and understands that humans are extremely resilient and adaptive.

She describes therapy as a place where individuals access that resiliency to manage all that life throws at them when it becomes too difficult to navigate on their own. She emphasizes the importance of support and encouragement.

Dr. Schaefer became motivated by the disparities in resources available in the mental health community. She has worked to address these disparities and issues, both at the individual and community level. She pursued training opportunities in school-based, hospital, and community mental health settings. In her practice today, she continues to be inspired by the resiliency that individuals display, as her clients work to navigate complex situations and achieve new goals.

When inspiring change in her clients, Dr. Schaefer applies a Cognitive Behavioral approach with special attention at building insight and awareness into patterns of behavior and understanding the re-experiencing of historical triggers in present day situations. She uses socratic questioning, reflective discussion, cognitive reframing and deconstruction of shame, and guidance in replacement behaviors for problematic patterns. Dr. Schaefer has a special clinical interest in working with individuals struggling with a variety of relationship concerns, including personal insecurities in dating, break-ups, communicating needs with partners, navigating misunderstandings, and concerns with sexuality and attraction.
